Small Street in Japan

Japanese Postcards
Concert

Tuesday, 28th of November 2023

6-7pm, Amaryllis Concert Hall @ Royal College of Music

This year marks the 170th year since the abolition of Japan’s 鎖国 (Sakoku, isolationism lasting from 1639 to 1853). Japan began to reconnect with the world after 1853 and Japanese art and music rapidly spread across the world, especially through events such as World Fairs in Paris, sparking a fascination towards Japan and Japonisme.

To celebrate Japanese composers and culture, this concert will feature works by Japanese composers alongside O Hototogisu! by British composer Oliver Knussen. The performance will conclude with the premiere of Sakamoto Ryuichi's 'Flower is not a flower' arrangement by Rieko Makita.

This concert will feature soloist Rieko Makita and students of the Royal College of Music.
